The best 2022 movies came from around the country and the world. The year also saw the lines blur between conventional ‘mass’ Bollywood Cinema and regional cinema. The biggest blockbusters came from the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada movie industries. Whether you're a fan of ‘masala’ blockbusters, indie films, or something in between, there's sure to be something for everyone. So we asked around the team, and put together a list of the best movies of 2022.

RRR (2022) on IMDb

A movie that took the world by storm.

A big-budget spectacle, Rajamouli’s RRR is an anti-colonial drama revolving around two freedom fighters, played by Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. A rare yet roaring mix of genres, RRR is a mythological, action, bromance and superhero story all at once. The actors add substance to their roles, however, the biggest star of the movie is Rajamouli, who even makes a blink-and-miss appearance at the end. And what can we say about the music that’s not said better by a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination. It’s streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix and Zee5 now.

An immersive and entertaining retelling of Kannada folklore, Kantara took many by surprise. It is hard to pinpoint one thing that makes Kantara tick.
